Heredity
Students investigate how genetic information is transmitted and how variation occurs.
- DNA and genetic information
- Transmission of heritable characteristics
- Genetic variation
- Inheritance
- Mutations
- Genetic technologies and their applications
Year 12 Biology brings together complex biological concepts, scientific investigation, data analysis and the application of knowledge to unfamiliar situations.
At Markitup, our Year 12 Biology program helps students understand the biology behind the question, apply their knowledge and communicate their reasoning clearly.
Our Year 12 Biology program is aligned with the NSW Biology 11–12 Syllabus (2025).
The new Year 12 course begins in Term 4 2027, with the first HSC examination under the new syllabus in 2028.
Our experienced, high-achieving tutors help students break down complex biological concepts and apply their knowledge to increasingly challenging questions.

Students receive Biology comprehension booklets containing:
The new Year 12 Biology course consists of four focus areas. Each has 30 indicative hours, making 120 hours in total, including 10 hours of depth studies.
Students investigate how genetic information is transmitted and how variation occurs.
Students investigate the causes and effects of disease and strategies used to prevent and manage disease.
Students investigate biological diversity and the factors that influence populations, species and ecosystems.
Students investigate how biological knowledge and technologies can be applied to medicine, agriculture and biodiversity conservation.
By Year 12, knowing the content is only part of the challenge.
We help students move from Learn → Understand → Apply → Analyse → Explain.
This is particularly important when HSC-style questions use unfamiliar stimulus material, data, diagrams or scenarios.
Want to see how we teach difficult Biology concepts?
Students need to understand:
HSC Biology questions can require students to interpret information before they can answer the question.
These skills are particularly important because NESA states that HSC questions may require students to integrate knowledge, understanding and skills from across the course, and questions may refer to stimulus material.

Working scientifically is integrated throughout Year 12 Biology. Students develop skills in:
These skills are integrated across the four focus areas and are assessed throughout the HSC examination.
At Markitup, students practise interpreting evidence, analysing information and explaining their reasoning, not simply recalling facts.
Want to understand how we prepare students for these skills?
Our lessons follow a structured approach:
Students learn the concept, work through examples with their tutor, practise questions and apply their knowledge to increasingly challenging problems.
Lessons can also include difficult schoolwork, assessment questions, data interpretation, biological diagrams, stimulus-based questions, extended responses and HSC-style questions.
Have a particular Biology topic your child is struggling with?
The HSC Biology examination is a 3-hour written examination plus 10 minutes reading time.
Under the new syllabus, the paper is worth 100 marks and consists of Section I: 20 marks of objective-response questions, and Section II: 80 marks of questions containing multiple parts, including longer-response items.
Working scientifically is integrated throughout the examination.

Year 12 students can bring their school Biology work, assessment questions and difficult concepts to class.
This allows tutors to help students understand what they are currently studying while continuing with the Markitup program.
Enrolled Biology students can also receive additional support before upcoming Biology exams.
Year 12 Biology requires consistent review and application.
Students receive structured homework to reinforce concepts covered in class and develop their ability to apply knowledge independently.
As students progress through Year 12, we increasingly focus on applying their knowledge to unfamiliar situations.
Students practise moving from:
This helps students become more comfortable when questions are presented using unfamiliar examples, data or stimulus material.
Our Year 12 Biology program is aligned with the Biology 11–12 Syllabus (2025). Working scientifically is integrated throughout the course.

Year 12 Biology requires more than knowing the textbook content.
Our tutors help students understand the processes, relationships and evidence behind the content, then apply that knowledge to different types of questions.
Students learn how to organise their knowledge, interpret information and communicate their understanding clearly.
Our goal is not simply to help students memorise more content. We help students develop the ability to:
Give your child more support through Year 12.
Maximum 8 students so tutors can provide individual attention.
Students follow a clear program aligned with the NSW syllabus.
Students receive structured Biology booklets with theory, diagrams, examples and practice.
Learn from tutors who understand Biology and how to explain complex concepts clearly.
Students can bring difficult schoolwork and assessment questions to class.
Regular practice helps students consolidate their learning.
Students regularly practise the skills needed for school assessments and the HSC.
Year 11 and 12 students can trial one lesson for every subject before enrolling.
Still deciding? Ask Miu and find out how our Year 12 Biology program works.
Regular support throughout the year gives students more time to understand difficult concepts, practise applying their knowledge and prepare for assessments before the HSC arrives. Let your child experience a Markitup Biology lesson before enrolling.
