What we teach

What We Teach

Our Year 11 Chemistry program follows the new Chemistry 11–12 Syllabus (2025), which replaces the previous Chemistry Stage 6 Syllabus (2017). The course has three focus areas:

Properties and Structure of Matter

Students develop an understanding of the structure, properties and behaviour of matter.

  • Elements, compounds and mixtures
  • Atomic structure
  • The periodic table and trends
  • Chemical bonding
  • Molecular structure
  • Intermolecular forces
  • Physical and chemical properties
  • Relationships between structure and properties

Quantitative Chemistry

Students develop the mathematical skills needed to solve Chemistry problems accurately.

  • The mole concept
  • Molar mass
  • Chemical formulae
  • Chemical equations
  • Stoichiometric relationships
  • Molar concentration
  • Quantitative calculations
  • Interpreting and using chemical data

Chemical Reactions

Students examine how and why chemical reactions occur and how they can be represented and analysed.

  • Types of chemical reactions
  • Representing chemical reactions
  • Energy changes
  • Factors affecting reactions
  • Observations and evidence
  • Applying chemical concepts to problems
New syllabus skills

Working Scientifically

Chemistry is not just about knowing the content.

The new syllabus places strong emphasis on Working scientifically, including:

  • 1Questioning and predicting
  • 2Planning investigations
  • 3Conducting investigations
  • 4Processing data and information
  • 5Analysing data and information
  • 6Problem-solving
  • 7Communicating using scientific language and evidence

These skills are integrated throughout the Chemistry course.

At Markitup, students are encouraged to explain their reasoning, interpret information, apply concepts to unfamiliar questions and communicate their understanding clearly.

How we teach Chemistry

Understand Chemistry, Don't Just Memorise It

Chemistry can become difficult when students rely on memorising definitions and formulas without understanding how the concepts connect.

We focus on helping students understand:

  1. 1Concept
  2. 2Explanation
  3. 3Application
  4. 4Problem Solving

Students learn why something happens, how to recognise it in a question and how to apply their knowledge to solve unfamiliar problems.

This is particularly important as Chemistry questions increasingly require students to apply knowledge rather than simply recall information.

What Happens in a Markitup Chemistry Lesson?

Our lessons follow a structured approach:

  1. 1Learn
  2. 2Understand
  3. 3Practise
  4. 4Apply
  5. 5Review

Students are taught the concepts, work through examples with their tutor, practise questions and apply their understanding to increasingly challenging problems.

Students can also bring questions from school when they need additional help understanding a particular topic.

Practice & assessments

Regular Practice & Assessment Preparation

Students need more than weekly lessons to build strong Chemistry skills.

Year 11 assessment preparation is incorporated into the program throughout the year.

Chemistry assessment coming up? Book a free trial and bring along the areas your child is finding difficult.

Our program includes regular practice so students can:

  • Consolidate new concepts
  • Develop calculation accuracy
  • Practise applying formulas and chemical relationships
  • Interpret graphs, tables and chemical data
  • Answer extended-response questions
  • Work through unfamiliar problems
  • Prepare for upcoming school assessments

Support With School Chemistry

Students can bring their schoolwork, assessment questions or difficult Chemistry concepts to class for additional support.

This helps connect what students learn at Markitup with what they are currently studying at school.

Enrolled Chemistry students can also receive additional support before upcoming Chemistry exams.

Structured Weekly Homework

Regular practice is an important part of learning Chemistry.

Students receive structured homework to reinforce the concepts covered in class and continue practising between lessons.

Homework helps students:

  • Consolidate weekly learning
  • Identify areas they don't understand
  • Build calculation fluency
  • Practise applying concepts independently
  • Prepare for upcoming topics and assessments
New NSW syllabus

Aligned With the NSW Chemistry Syllabus

Our program is aligned with the NSW Chemistry 11–12 Syllabus (2025).

  1. 2028The new syllabus begins for Year 11, replacing the previous Chemistry Stage 6 Syllabus (2017).
  2. Term 4 2028The new Year 12 syllabus begins. The previous syllabus continues for Year 12 during 2028.
  3. 2029The first HSC examination for the new syllabus.

Students can build their Year 11 knowledge and skills with a clear understanding of what is expected throughout the senior Chemistry pathway.

Experienced, High-Achieving Tutors

Chemistry can be difficult to teach well.

Our tutors need to understand the subject deeply and be able to break complex concepts into clear, manageable steps.

Students work with experienced tutors who can explain the theory, demonstrate problem-solving methods and provide guidance when students get stuck.

The goal

Build Stronger Chemistry Skills

Our goal is not simply to help students complete more questions. We want students to become better at:

  • Understanding scientific concepts
  • Applying Chemistry knowledge
  • Solving quantitative problems
  • Analysing information and data
  • Answering unfamiliar questions
  • Writing scientifically
  • Working independently

Strong Year 11 foundations also provide important assumed knowledge for Year 12 Chemistry.

Give your child a strong start in Chemistry.
