Year 11 Biology TutoringUnderstand Biology. Build strong foundations. Prepare for Year 12.

Year 11 Biology introduces students to the complexity of living systems, from cells and biological processes through to ecosystems and evolution.

At Markitup, our Year 11 Biology program helps students understand biological concepts, apply their knowledge and explain their thinking clearly, rather than simply memorising large amounts of content.

The program

A Complete Year 11 Biology Program

Markitup has developed its own structured Biology program aligned with the NSW Biology 11–12 Syllabus (2025).

The new syllabus begins for Year 11 in Term 1 2027 and replaces the previous Biology Stage 6 Syllabus (2017). The first HSC examination under the new syllabus is in 2028.

Our experienced, high-achieving tutors help students break down complex biological concepts and understand how different ideas connect.

What we teach

What We Teach

The new Year 11 Biology course consists of three focus areas.

Cells as the Basis of Life

Students investigate cells as the fundamental unit of life and explore how cell structures enable biological processes.

  • Cell structure and function
  • Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
  • Cell membranes
  • Movement of substances
  • Cellular processes
  • Biological molecules
  • How cell structures enable life processes

Cells to Systems

Students investigate how cells work together to form tissues, organs and systems in complex multicellular organisms.

  • Cell specialisation
  • Tissues and organs
  • Organisation in multicellular organisms
  • Structure and function of biological systems
  • Interactions between cells, tissues and systems
  • How biological systems work together

Evolution and Ecosystems

Students investigate relationships between organisms and their environment and use the theory of evolution by natural selection to explain biological change.

  • Evolution
  • Natural selection
  • Adaptation
  • Relationships between organisms
  • Ecosystems
  • Population interactions
  • Environmental factors
  • Biodiversity and change
How we teach Biology

Biology Is More Than Memorising Content

Biology has a lot of content, but memorising pages of notes is not enough.

We help students move from:

This is particularly important when questions use unfamiliar examples, diagrams, data or stimulus material.

Want to see how we teach Biology?

Students need to understand:

  1. What is happening?
  2. Why does it happen?
  3. How are the processes connected?
  4. What does the evidence show?
  5. How can I apply this knowledge to a new situation?
  6. How should I explain my answer using scientific terminology?
New syllabus skills

Working Scientifically

Working scientifically is integrated throughout the Year 11 Biology course. Students develop skills in:

  • 1Questioning and predicting
  • 2Planning scientific investigations
  • 3Conducting investigations
  • 4Processing data and information
  • 5Analysing data and information
  • 6Problem-solving
  • 7Communicating scientific arguments using evidence and scientific terminology

These skills are not taught separately from Biology content. They are integrated across the focus areas.

At Markitup, students practise interpreting information, analysing evidence and explaining their reasoning, not simply recalling facts.

Want to understand how we teach these skills?

Data & diagrams

Data, Diagrams & Scientific Reasoning

Biology questions often require students to do more than recall information.

Our program gives students regular opportunities to practise these skills.

Need help with Biology questions? Book a free trial and bring along the areas your child is finding difficult.

Students may need to:

  • Interpret graphs and tables
  • Analyse experimental results
  • Identify patterns and trends
  • Interpret diagrams
  • Compare biological processes
  • Draw conclusions from evidence
  • Evaluate information
  • Apply knowledge to unfamiliar scenarios
  • Communicate a scientific argument
Inside the classroom

What Happens in a Markitup Biology Lesson?

Our lessons follow a structured approach:

  1. 1Learn
  2. 2Understand
  3. 3Practise
  4. 4Apply
  5. 5Review

Students learn the concept, work through examples with their tutor, practise questions and apply their knowledge to increasingly challenging problems.

Lessons can also include difficult schoolwork, assessment questions, data interpretation, biological diagrams, extended responses, stimulus-based questions and HSC-style questions.

Support With School Biology

Students can bring their school Biology work, assessment questions and difficult concepts to class.

This allows tutors to help students understand the content they are currently studying while continuing with the Markitup program.

Enrolled Biology students can also receive additional support before upcoming Biology exams.

Structured Weekly Homework

Biology requires consistent review.

Students receive structured homework to reinforce concepts covered in class and develop their ability to apply knowledge independently.

Homework helps students:

  • Consolidate weekly learning
  • Review important terminology
  • Practise applying concepts
  • Interpret diagrams and data
  • Answer written-response questions
  • Identify gaps in understanding
  • Prepare for upcoming assessments
Building towards Year 12

From Understanding to HSC-Style Questions

As students progress through Year 11, we gradually move from learning the content to applying it in more complex situations.

Students practise moving from:

  1. 1Understand the concept
  2. 2Apply the concept
  3. 3Analyse the information
  4. 4Explain the answer

This helps students become more comfortable when questions are presented using unfamiliar examples or stimulus material.

New NSW syllabus

Aligned With the New NSW Biology Syllabus

Our Year 11 Biology program is aligned with the Biology 11–12 Syllabus (2025).

The Year 11 course includes Cells as the basis of life, Cells to systems, and Evolution and ecosystems. Working Scientifically is integrated throughout the course, and students also complete depth studies and at least one fieldwork exercise as part of the Year 11 course requirements.

  1. Term 1 2027The new syllabus starts for Year 11, replacing the previous Biology Stage 6 Syllabus (2017).
  2. 2028The first HSC examination under the new syllabus.
  3. 120 hoursEach Year 11 focus area has 40 indicative hours, making a total of 120 hours including 10 hours of depth studies.

Experienced, High-Achieving Tutors

Biology can become overwhelming when students are expected to remember large amounts of information without understanding how it connects.

Our tutors focus on helping students understand the processes, relationships and reasoning behind the content.

Students learn how to organise their knowledge, interpret information and communicate their understanding clearly.

The goal

Build Stronger Biology Skills

Our goal is not simply to help students memorise more content. We help students develop the ability to:

  • Understand biological concepts
  • Explain biological processes
  • Apply knowledge to unfamiliar situations
  • Analyse data and evidence
  • Interpret diagrams and stimulus material
  • Solve scientific problems
  • Use appropriate biological terminology
  • Communicate scientific arguments
  • Work independently
  • Prepare effectively for assessments

Give your child more support through Year 11.
