How we teach Business Studies

Business Studies Is More Than Memorising

Knowing the content is only the starting point.

HSC Business Studies requires students to apply their knowledge to business situations, analyse strategies and communicate their ideas clearly. Our lessons follow a structured approach:

  1. 1Learn
  2. 2Understand
  3. 3Apply
  4. 4Analyse
  5. 5Evaluate
  6. 6Communicate

Students progressively move from learning business concepts to applying them independently to unfamiliar case studies and HSC-style questions.

Case studies

Case Studies, Data & Business Information

Case studies are a major part of Business Studies.

Students need to identify relevant information, connect it to syllabus concepts and use it to support their responses.

The goal is to help students move beyond describing a business strategy to explaining why it is appropriate, how it works and what impact it may have on business performance.

See how your child approaches Business Studies questions and experience the Markitup lesson structure.

We practise:

  • Analysing case studies
  • Identifying key business issues
  • Applying syllabus concepts
  • Using business terminology accurately
  • Interpreting financial information
  • Analysing business strategies
  • Using relevant examples
  • Making judgements
  • Supporting responses with evidence
Writing skills

HSC Business Studies Writing Skills

Strong Business Studies responses require more than knowing the content. Students need to understand exactly what the question is asking and construct a response that addresses it directly. We develop skills in:

  • 1Short-answer responses
  • 2Extended responses
  • 3Business reports
  • 4Case study application
  • 5Using evidence
  • 6Explaining cause and effect
  • 7Analysing strategies
  • 8Making judgements
  • 9Using business terminology
  • 10Structuring longer responses under time pressure

Students practise writing answers that directly respond to the question rather than simply reproducing memorised notes.

Finance

Financial Calculations & Analysis

Finance is an important part of the HSC Business Studies course.

Students practise working with financial information and applying relevant calculations, including financial ratios. More importantly, students learn to interpret the results.

For example:

  1. 1Calculate
  2. 2Interpret
  3. 3Explain
  4. 4Make a judgement

This helps students connect financial data to the broader performance and management of a business.

Business reports

HSC Business Report Writing

Business Studies students need to be comfortable writing extended responses and business reports. The current HSC examination includes a dedicated extended-response question requiring a business report format, with an expected response of approximately 800 words. We teach students how to:

  1. 1

    Understand the question

  2. 2

    Identify the relevant syllabus content

  3. 3

    Select appropriate business examples

  4. 4

    Structure the response logically

  5. 5

    Apply case study evidence

  6. 6

    Analyse business strategies

  7. 7

    Make supported judgements

  8. 8

    Write within the time available
