  • Genetic variation
  • Inheritance
  • Mutations
  • Genetic technologies and their applications

Diseases

Students investigate the causes and effects of disease and strategies used to prevent and manage disease.

  • Causes of disease
  • Infectious and non-infectious diseases
  • Disease transmission
  • Immune responses
  • Disease prevention
  • Disease management
  • Public health strategies

Biodiversity

Students investigate biological diversity and the factors that influence populations, species and ecosystems.

  • Biodiversity
  • Biological classification
  • Population and ecosystem changes
  • Threats to biodiversity
  • Conservation strategies
  • Human impacts on ecosystems

Biotechnology

Students investigate how biological knowledge and technologies can be applied to medicine, agriculture and biodiversity conservation.

  • Biotechnology
  • Genetic technologies
  • Applications in medicine

  • Ethical and societal considerations
How we teach Biology

Biology Is More Than Memorising Content

By Year 12, knowing the content is only part of the challenge.

We help students move from Learn → Understand → Apply → Analyse → Explain.

This is particularly important when HSC-style questions use unfamiliar stimulus material, data, diagrams or scenarios.

Want to see how we teach difficult Biology concepts?

Students need to understand:

  1. What is happening?
  2. Why does it happen?
  3. What evidence supports the explanation?
  4. How are biological processes connected?
  5. How can I apply this knowledge to an unfamiliar situation?
  6. How should I communicate my answer using scientific terminology?
Scientific reasoning

Data, Stimulus & Scientific Reasoning

HSC Biology questions can require students to interpret information before they can answer the question.

These skills are particularly important because NESA states that HSC questions may require students to integrate knowledge, understanding and skills from across the course, and questions may refer to stimulus material.

Need help with Biology questions? Book a free trial and bring along the areas your child is finding difficult.

Students practise:

  • Interpreting graphs and tables
  • Analysing experimental results
  • Identifying patterns and trends
  • Interpreting biological diagrams
  • Analysing stimulus material
  • Drawing conclusions from evidence
  • Evaluating data
  • Applying biological knowledge to unfamiliar situations
  • Supporting answers with scientific evidence
Syllabus skills

Working Scientifically

Working scientifically is integrated throughout Year 12 Biology. Students develop skills in:

  • 1Questioning and predicting
  • 2Planning scientific investigations
  • 3Conducting investigations
  • 4Processing data and information
  • 5Analysing data and information
  • 6Problem-solving
  • 7Communicating scientific arguments using evidence and scientific terminology

These skills are integrated across the four focus areas and are assessed throughout the HSC examination.

At Markitup, students practise interpreting evidence, analysing information and explaining their reasoning, not simply recalling facts.

Inside the classroom

What Happens in a Markitup Biology Lesson?

Our lessons follow a structured approach:

  1. 1Learn
  2. 2Understand
  3. 3Practise
  4. 4Apply
  5. 5Review

Students learn the concept, work through examples with their tutor, practise questions and apply their knowledge to increasingly challenging problems.

Lessons can also include difficult schoolwork, assessment questions, data interpretation, biological diagrams, stimulus-based questions, extended responses and HSC-style questions.

HSC preparation

HSC Biology Preparation

The HSC Biology examination is a 3-hour written examination plus 10 minutes reading time.

Under the new syllabus, the paper is worth 100 marks and consists of Section I: 20 marks of objective-response questions, and Section II: 80 marks of questions containing multiple parts, including longer-response items.

Working scientifically is integrated throughout the examination.

Preparing for an upcoming Biology assessment? Book a free trial and bring along the topics your child needs help with.

Our program helps students practise the skills required for the HSC, including:

  • Interpreting stimulus material
  • Applying biological concepts
  • Analysing data
  • Explaining biological processes
  • Evaluating evidence
  • Answering multi-part questions
  • Writing extended responses
  • Using appropriate scientific terminology
  • Working accurately under time pressure

Support With School Biology & Assessments

Year 12 students can bring their school Biology work, assessment questions and difficult concepts to class.

This allows tutors to help students understand what they are currently studying while continuing with the Markitup program.

Enrolled Biology students can also receive additional support before upcoming Biology exams.

Structured Weekly Homework

Year 12 Biology requires consistent review and application.

Students receive structured homework to reinforce concepts covered in class and develop their ability to apply knowledge independently.

Homework helps students:

  • Consolidate weekly learning
  • Review important terminology
  • Practise applying concepts
  • Interpret diagrams and data
  • Answer written-response questions
  • Analyse stimulus material
  • Identify gaps in understanding
  • Prepare for upcoming assessments
Building towards the HSC

From Understanding to HSC-Style Questions

As students progress through Year 12, we increasingly focus on applying their knowledge to unfamiliar situations.

Students practise moving from:

  1. 1Understand the concept
  2. 2Apply the concept
  3. 3Analyse the evidence
  4. 4Explain the answer

This helps students become more comfortable when questions are presented using unfamiliar examples, data or stimulus material.

New NSW syllabus

Aligned With the New NSW Biology Syllabus

Our Year 12 Biology program is aligned with the Biology 11–12 Syllabus (2025). Working scientifically is integrated throughout the course.

  1. Term 4 2027The new Year 12 course begins.
  2. 2028The first HSC examination under the new syllabus.
  3. Year 11The Year 11 course is assumed knowledge for Year 12, making strong foundations from Year 11 important when students move into the senior course.

Experienced, High-Achieving Tutors

Year 12 Biology requires more than knowing the textbook content.

Our tutors help students understand the processes, relationships and evidence behind the content, then apply that knowledge to different types of questions.

Students learn how to organise their knowledge, interpret information and communicate their understanding clearly.

The goal

Build Stronger Biology Skills

Our goal is not simply to help students memorise more content. We help students develop the ability to:

  • Understand complex biological concepts
  • Explain biological processes
  • Apply knowledge to unfamiliar situations
  • Analyse data and evidence
  • Interpret diagrams and stimulus material
  • Evaluate scientific information
  • Use appropriate biological terminology
  • Communicate scientific arguments
